Beat the system.
1. Although delta does not accept kayaks, they do accept larger items such as windsurfers and surfboards. One day at the delta counter a supervisor denied a passenger traveling with a kayak to Nepal. The next 2 passengers were traveling to Costa Rica with surfboard bags almost double the size. The surfers were unfortunately accepted. Although "the rules" say no kayaks, sometimes a simple explanation of how wrong Delta's system is, works... Sometimes Not. If you get stuck in this situation, and are asked to take your bag to air freight, be nice, and talk to a supervisor. Explain your side of the story, and help him/her to realize that you are willing to pay, and its all about the money.
2. Checking a windsurfer/surfboard?: Many agents know what kayaks look like, so if you aren't fooled, they wont be either.
